CLASS REPRESENTATIVES
London, 6th August 2018

Following on from the AGM where Class Representatives were raised again I would like to call upon each Class to nominate their Representative.

To remind you the outline responsibility of each Class Rep is:

  1. To act as the communication focal point for their Class and represent the interests of their Class;
  2. To bring any proposed technical changes or issues to the attention of the Technical and Safety Director;
  3. To bring any race issues (excluding Driving Standards) to the attention of the Competitions Director;
  4. To participate in regular meetings (probably every other race meeting during the season for ½ hour and once or twice during the closed season) with the Chairman and Commercial Director to discuss any issues within their Class and how the Class can be promoted to increase membership.

NB: A Class Representative will not be a member of the CGRC Board We would like representatives from the following classes:
  • Classic
  • Mega
  • Sigmax
  • Sigmax VCT
  • Sigma/ Sigma VCT
As we are not all together until Anglesey could interested members please send nominations (themselves or others) to Andrew and I and we will then facilitate a Class process to determine who the representative will be.  It would then be our intention to have a first meeting at Anglesey if possible.

2018 BOARD ELECTIONS

SNETTERTON, 4TH AUGUST 2018

Following the close of the AGM, the new Board held its first meeting to determine who will take on each role. I was nominated by Roger to succeed him as Chairman, which I feel honoured to have been asked, and this was supported by the Board. I look forward to the year ahead and leading the club forward into the future. All ideas, help, and feedback are welcomed.

Thruxton
The timetable for Thruxton on the BARC website is now final.

This means, regretfully, that there is no free practice. Although we were originally promised free practice for the event, this seems to have been defeated by the number of events on the timetable.

There was an option to squeeze all of the qualifying into a single session and use the spare time for free practice, but given the nature of the circuit this was not considered wise.

For anyone who has not been to Thruxton before, don't be too worried. It's probably the easiest circuit in the country to learn - just two braking points and - arguably - three corners. With 20 minutes of qualifying you should get around 13 laps which ought to be plenty to get the hang of it.

Briefings:

There will be a briefingfor all drivers, at 10:30, to be held in the Grads' awning.
Any new drivers will also need to attend one of the New Drivers' Briefings, as detailed in the final instructions

(Note: an earlier version of this note said there were two briefings, one at 9:00, but on the current timetable the first group is qualifying at 9, so that doesn't work).

Entry for our Spa races are now open via the CGRC Event Entry System

  • The entry fee is 695 if you enter before 20th July, or 745 afterwards, which covers 2.5 hours of track time - 2 x 30 minute practice sessions, 30 minute qualifying, and 2 x 30 minute races.

  • All classes will race together. There are 65 places on the grid

  • Priority will be given to racing members of the CGRC up until 20th July (i.e. the end of the discount period). After the 20th July we will also be opening up the event to guest racers and that could mean that you do not get a confirmed place if you leave it too late. So if you want to enter, please do so before 20th July.

  • After the 65 places are filled there will be up to 13 reserve places available.

For newcomers, note that you must have a "National A" licence to race at Spa. It is your responsibility to ensure that you have obtained the necessary signatures and upgraded your licence prior to the event.

Note that entries should be considered non-refundable; refunds will only be given in exceptional circumstances.

If you don't manage to get a full place and you end up as a reserve, don't despair. In the past, all of our reserves have always got to race. Several people always drop out for one reason or another in the weeks before the event. There are, of course, no guarantees - but it's more than likely you will get to race.

Castle Combe



Hope everyone had a great time at Silverstone.  With just a couple of weeks gap, it's time to get ready for Combe.

Although the booking system doesn't close until next Thursday, please don't leave it that late. We need to allocate grids, and we need to send out tickets.

Tickets will be posted out early next week, so if you haven't got your entry in by the weekend you may need to collect tickets at the circuit.

If, for any reason, you've decided not to race at Combe, please make sure your race schedule reflects that so we don't have to chase you up for your entry. Also if you're one of the 'undecideds', please fix that ASAP.

Castle Combe 28th May - New entry system

Castle Combe entries will be taken by the club (not the BARC online entry process) using a new system. You can find it via the Members -> CGRC Entry System link from the website as before, or via this direct link: https://bookwhen.com/cgrc

The new system will accept credit cards or debit cards (and is significantly cheaper for the club than the previous WorldPay system).

Entries cost £430 for members bookings before 24th May. That INCLUDES free practice, along with qualifying, one 20 minute race and one 25 minute race.

For those few members who have already booked via BARC, we will arrange a transfer of entries.

Ideally we'd like everyone to book ASAP. But if you're not able to book straight away, please do make sure your race schedule is up to date.

Guests should use the direct link above to access the booking system, where they will be asked to contact Andrew to confirm details and be allocated a race number.

We'll try to get the calendar out quicker next year so people can better plan their social engagements....

SILVERSTONE: There are 24 people who are apparently undecided about Silverstone. If all of them turn up, we won't fit on one grid (with a 58 grid limit).  However, that seems unlikely, so we might be able to go single grid Spa-style, and trade that off for free practice and/or longer races. But we can't do that unless we know. So PLEASE complete your race schedule - TODAY. Remember, only "Definitely" or "Definitely not" are useful responses - if it's "Definitely unless the dog eats my HANS device" then that should be a Definitely.

BTW, might be some problems getting through to me at the chairman email address - use my oracle.com or gmail.com addresses by preference. Facebook messenger works too.

The Martin Kay Trophy

For those who don't know, Martin was a very popular Supergrad driver who died suddenly in early 2016. The Martin Kay trophy is dedicated to him.

Previously this trophy was awarded to the driver who obtained the most points in multiple classes. As we're not expecting many drivers to enter multiple classes this year, we have reassessed the criteria.

Following consultation with drivers who were very close to Martin, we have decided that the trophy will be awarded to the person, persons or team who have "most demonstrated the sheer joy of racing" - because that's what Martin was about.

We have asked people who were close to Martin to select the winner(s) of the trophy, and they would be happy to receive nominations from members of the club.

Oulton Park last-minute info:

1. Tyres: Polleysport will only be at the circuit FRIDAY (including Friday evening). If you need tyres for the next round you'll need to make arrangements to collect them Friday. Polleysport are not at Cadwell. You should already have booked any tyres you need, if not call them today.
2. Briefing: You've all read your finals, and previous forum posts, and will know that there's a compulsory all-drivers briefing at 7:45 in the Grads' hospitality area. That will be followed by the new drivers briefing for drivers who've not raced on the circuit before.

3. Circuit access: From midday Thursday. It's not clear how late they will be open - if you're expecting to arrive very late call the circuit to check.

4. Paddock plan: There isn't one, at least not one specific to our area. Make sure you stick to the area indicated for us in the finals, and be considerate of others. Don't take more space than you need.  If you arrive very early please don't park in the centre where the hospitality area needs to be.

There is no power in the paddock - if using a genny please don't run it late at night.

5. Free Practice: £50 for 20 minutes, payable in cash at signing on.

6. Weather: It's lovely and sunny today (at least in London). Saturday is due to be dry, but much colder. Don't forget to bring a coat!

You should have received tickets by email by now. If you haven't, then check your spam folder. If you still don't have them, there's a good possibility you're not entered. Get on to David Wheadon at BARC (from their contacts page) ASAP.

We have a 20 minute free practice session at the start of the day. This costs £50 and is payable (in cash) at signing on.  If you intend to do it, try to get signed on as soon as it opens. Anyone NOT doing free practice, please give sign-on and scrutineering priority to those who are.

Don't forget the mandatory driver briefing for ALL drivers at 7:45 am (yes, just as you're trying to get scrutineered) in the Grads' awning.

It's not clear what time the circuit opens - I presume it's 7am.  The helpful security contractors have been known to refuse access even to marshals and officials until the dot of opening time. So don't leave yourself with a pile of things to do at the circuit as there may not be time.

Castle Combe entries:

We have now agreed with BARC that they will take the entries for this event as normal through the BARC booking system. The price will be £430 (discounted for early entries), or £470 for late entries. This includes 15 minutes of free practice, 15 minutes quali, one 20 minute and one 25 minute race.

Spa will be be booked separately through the Grads' Event Booking system.  More details on that soon.

While checking through your MSA handbooks, you'll no doubt have noticed the new regulation K(3) which says that fire extinguishers have to have been serviced within the past two years. This was always a rule for foreign rounds, but previously has not been a requirement for UK MSA rounds.

Most people have Lifeline extinguishers. They have a network of approved agents - see  their dealer page. Failing that, you can send it directly to Lifeline for servicing, but by the time you've paid two lots of postage it might not be much cheaper than buying a new one from JJC (unbranded but made by Lifeline).

Note that Lifeline won't service an extinguisher if it's more than 10 years old or has been previously serviced by a non-approved agent.

Caterham Graduates Racing Club - summary for regulation changes for 2018

1. Caterham Graduates Classes

Classes have been re-structured to allow all current and previous Caterham Championship cars with Sigma engines to race with the Caterham Graduates Racing Club.
Sigma Graduates Class, include 3 sub-classes:

Sigma - Cars to the specification of the 2017 Sigma Graduates Class, including cars with VCT and non-VCT engines. VCT cars will continue to carry a higher minimum weight and run without cold air intake.

Sigma VCT - A year 2014 onwards Academy specification car may compete in this sub-class, with any or all the modification that are applied to an Academy specification car to meet the current or previous Caterham 270R Championship Regulations.

Sigmax VCT - A year 2014 onwards Academy specification car may compete in this sub-class, with any or all the modification that are applied to an Academy specification car to meet the current or previous Caterham 310R Championship Regulations.

Trophies will be awarded at each race depending on the number of starters in each sub-class.
Points will be scored in each sub-class depending on the number of starters in each sub-class.
Championship trophies will not be awarded to sub-classes but will be awarded to the Sigma Graduates class based on points scored regardless of sub-class.

Mega Graduates Class
The Mega Graduates Class will incorporate Super Graduates specification cars with none, some or all, of the modifications permitted for Mega Graduate Class

Classic Graduates Class
Class structure unchanged

Sigmax Graduates Class
Class structure unchanged

2. Race length

The standard scheduled race length will be between 20 and 25 minutes. International meetings are likely to have longer races. “Plus one lap” has been dropped at the request of BARC.

3. "Free practice"

Where race schedules permit, a "free practice" session will be included. Priority will be given to competitors have not taken part in a test day or track day in the week prior to the meeting. If "free practice" is oversubscribed any additional places will be allocated by ballot or other method at the discretion of the organisers.

4. False starts

If a false start results in a time advantage of more than 10 seconds then an additional time penalty will be applied. This additional penalty shall be not less than the time advantage gained.

5. Penalties

The current "3x points multiplier" for a penalty that includes licence points will remain but will be applied at the discretion of the Driving Standards Team. This change has been made to avoid inconsistent Clerking decisions from significantly affecting the championship results.

6. Scrutineering

Cars must be presented for pre-event scrutineering in a clean condition. The scrutineer may refuse to check any car that is not presented in a clean condition. To facilitate examination, helmets should be presented for scrutineering in a clean condition and without FHR devices attached to the helmet. An addition at the request of our scrutineer.

7. Safety

The Caterham race seat (Tillet) must be fitted with additional support behind the head restraint area of the seat to meet the requirements of MSA regulation K13.

FIA approved roll cage padding shall be fitted to the roll cage main hoop, roof diagonal and driver's side cant rail (roof rail to the right of the driver), within 150mm of the driver's helmet.

Where seats are bolted to the chassis floor, mounting shall be in compliance with K2.2. The Caterham floor is aluminium and therefore particular attention should be paid to the installation of bolts and counterplates.

Exhaust guards may be removed but exhaust catalyst guards must be retained for Sigmas.

A Caterham supplied passenger side rear wheel/cockpit protection bar may be fitted.

All cars must be fitted with towing eyes (Q19.1.3). This regulation is unchanged from 2017 but will be enforced in 2018. Claiming that the roll cage may be used for towing is no longer acceptable.

8. Authorised engine builders

  • McMillan Motorsport (All engines)
  • The Classic Car Workshop, Ben Rockey (All engines)
  • Godfrey Racing Support (All engines)
  • Paul Freeman Motor Services (Mega Graduate engines)
  • Caterham Cars Ltd and their appointed agents, (Sigma engines)

9. Minimum weight

The Classes' minimum weights are:
Caterham Classic Graduates Class  610kg
Caterham Sigma sub-class 2008 to 2013  605kg
Caterham Sigma sub-class 2014 onwards  630kg
Caterham Sigma VCT sub-class  615kg
Caterham Sigmax VCT sub-class  615kg
Caterham SigMax-Graduates Class  605kg
Caterham Mega-Graduates Class  600kg

10. Future possible regulation changes

Tyres will remain as 2017, however a replacement tyre for the A048R will be evaluated during 2018 for possible use in 2019.

We're pleased to announce that registration for the 2018 Caterham Graduates Championship will open this Friday, 1st DECEMBER.

The championship fee is £250, but entries during DECEMBER will be discounted to £200. Payment, as usual, is through the WorldPay system.

You can sign up through the website, through the Enrol with the Club link under the "About Grads Racing" tab.

There's been a modest increase in the membership fee this year. This will be used to invest in club facilities and for marketing the club to potential new members.  As with all racing clubs, we've seen declining membership over the last year or two, and it's essential that we attract new members to keep our numbers healthy as some members retire or move on.  We have compared our membership fees to other similar clubs and series, and we're confident that they still represent great value for money.

Please fill this out as we actually do use it to plan grids and numbers....and history shows that the people that don't fill it out are often the same people that complain when the grids are allocated! If you are 'intending to race' (e.g. if you don't smash up your car) then please put 'Definitely'.

Expanded class structure for 2018

The post follows on from an email over the weekend to all racing Members.

The Club has been working on the best way of attracting new members with an updated class structure for 2018, whilst keeping existing Members' interests in mind, by not introducing new car specifications into existing classes that could possibly present an unfair advantage.

Charles Elliott and Nick Haryett have been dealing with the future of our Super Graduate Class. Those who continue to race their existing car in 2018 will be racing in the Mega class, which will combine the current Super and Mega Graduate classes.

Those currently racing a Super will have the option to: -

  • Race your Super 'as-is'. You probably won't win races, but you can still have a good race with Megas who drive at the same pace as you.
  • Partially upgrade your Super, starting with the Mega engine upgrade, which will close most of the performance gap, and you can add other elements of a Mega if you want to at your own pace.
  • Fully upgrade your Super to Mega specification 

In terms of attracting new members, our strategy is to open up the Club to as a wide an audience as possible, so we can grow the Club membership and bring ourselves up to date, by offering a viable alternative to all the current Caterham Motorsport classes up to 310R. With our current SigMax cars ceasing production in 2013 we need to fully embrace the latest Caterham products in order to grow.

In order to attract the newer '2014 on' spec cars from the 4 current Caterham Motorsport classes (Academy / Roadsport / 270R and 310R) we are introducing 2 new classes.

SigMax VCT based on the Caterham Motorsport 310R car

and

Sigma VCT based on the Caterham Motorsport 270R car

So, for next year we will have 6 classes - 4 Ford Engine classes, 1 Rover 16v class and the Classic class as follows: -

The points system and awards that will apply to the classes are under consideration by the Club and will form part of the 2018 Championship regulations.

Our 4 Ford engine classes for 2018 allow us to accommodate our existing Members and attract new Members i.e. anyone from the current Caterham Academy, Roadsport, 270R, 310R classes, along with the older pre-2014 Caterham Supersport class.

Our Sigma / Sigma VCT / SigMax VCT classes will give progression for both existing Members and new joiners to the Club who wish to race the current specification Caterham.

Karting on 18th November at Daytona Sandown Park may now be booked through the CGRC Event Entry. The cost is £80 per driver, limited to a maximum of 30 drivers, and the format will be:

Practice (10 minutes).

Heat 1 (10 minutes).

Heat 2 (10 minutes).

Final (15 minutes).

Sign on is at 2pm and all drivers must attend a mandatory safety briefing at 2:30pm.

All drivers will take part in all the above (so 45 minutes track time each) with grid positions for the Final determined by finishing positions in the two Heats.

The minimum age is 14 and WAGS are encouraged to take part.

The overall winner will receive a magnificent trophy at the Awards Dinner plus there will be some other highly sought after prizes!

Please note that Polleysport will only be attending Snetterton on the Friday. They will be there until late in the evening, but will NOT be there Saturday or Sunday.

Please remember you need to call (01354 688111) or email Polleysport to order tyres. If them not being there on Saturday / Sunday causes you a serious problem, you might want to call them to see if there are any alternatives. Their site is about an hour from Snett, but I don't know if anyone will be there over the weekend.

We're currently looking to create a promotional video, that we can use to advertise the club to new prospective drivers. As a result, we're looking to obtain as much High-Quality Footage as possible to use in this video.

This isn't going to be Spins/Bins video, We're looking for Clean / Fast  / Close racing clips from throughout the season and from all classes. So if you've got that “Legendary Maneuver” that you'd be happy to share with us we'd love to have it!

Please bring your footage with you on a USB Drive to Snetterton Circuit where Mark Johnson will then take a copy and return your USB Drive during the weekend. Alternatively, if you'd like to send these across now via WeTransfer.Com please send to mark.jj@me.com

We'll be performing a similar exercise at Silverstone to collate any videos you'd like us to include in the Awards Dinner Spins and Bins Video.

The 2017 Caterham Graduates Award Dinner will be held at the very special venue of Brooklands Museum on Saturday 18th November 2017. Brooklands is located in Weybridge, Surrey, close to J10 or J11 of the M25. Those attending will have free access to the Museum all day Saturday prior to our event which starts at 6pm the Members' bar. Pre-dinner drinks will be served in the ERA shed at 6.30 alongside the Napier Railton and many other famous display exhibits. 

Brooklands was the birthplace of British motorsport and aviation and the site of the first world's first purpose-built motor racing circuit which opened in 1907. It has four listed buildings including the Brooklands Automobile Racing Club Clubhouse where we will be holding our event. The evening will be hosted again by race commentator Chris Dawes. After the 3 course dinner, Geoff Lees, 1981 F2 champion, F1 driver and multiple Le Mans racer will talk about his career and hold a Q&A, to be followed by prize giving. The evening will finish off with a disco  or socialising in the bar depending on your preference. 

On Sunday, you might want to visit Mercedes Benz World next door for a look around or buy a few laps around their test track. We have negotiated a very limited number of rooms at the discounted hotel rate of £129/room including breakfast at the nearby Brooklands Hotel. You can reserve a room through a separate 'event' on the CGRC website.


Tickets are £60 per person and include:

A slightly revised Briefing Note 2 is now available with 3 amendments shown in red following information supplied today by the race organisers.

The key amendment relates to where refuelling is to be carried out during our free practice sessions. It must take place in the pit lane.

FORMAT

Our numbers put us just below the grid limit of 47, so we have taken the opportunity to put all cars on a combined grid (Spa style) and have 2 longer races. Each race will now be 35 mins.

Qualifying will also now be a combined grid in two sessions, with your fastest time in each session defining your start position in the corresponding race.

TYRES

We now have a total of 125 minutes of testing time and 120 minutes of qualifying / race time.  

Please ensure that you have sufficient tyres to cover your track time. With the exception of Classics, it's probably essential to use a separate set of testing tyres.  

With 25 minute qualifying sessions, think about tyre usage.  You don't need to run for the full session, once you've set a good lap time consider pulling in to conserve your tyres rather than running the full session.  Or at least come in and let them cool a bit before going out again.

Polley Motorsport will not be at Zandvoort.  If you need extra tyres, order them now and arrange local fitting. Don't leave it until the last moment.

Note: the use of separate qualifying session require a sporting
bulletin, which can be found in the Competitors' Information section of the web site (alongside a PDF version of this note).

A further briefing note will be issued shortly to cover detailed arrangements for the weekend.

Mark Cater, Nick Haryett and I are due to step down from the board by rotation. Two full directors (Peter and Tristan) have decided to step down, and Nigel - who was coopted to the board - is not standing for election. So that leaves six places on the board to be filled.

In addition to the three of us, who will all be restanding, I'm pleased to say we have four other very strong candidates for the board. We've asked each nominee to provide a short introduction, and those are collected together in a document in the members' area, direct link here. Cadwell

Timetable and final Instructions and are on the BARC website here Read them!

Note there is a briefing for ALL drivers at 8:45. Be there or risk a fine. Eagle-eyed Mega, Super and Sigma drivers may notice that they're due to sign on and attend the briefing at 8:45, then get scrutineered at 8:50. That's obviously not going to work, so go earlier or later (preferably earlier). Exact times are almost never enforced for sign on or scrutineering.

Paddock plan is at the end of the finals, we have the area to the right as you enter the main paddock. If that's not enough space we can overflow into the area marked "Overflow Paddock". Please don't park up anywhere else - the other groups WILL require you to move.  We may issue or more detailed paddock plan later in the week, or we may just leave people to sort themselves out.

Camera tethers: MSA regs say that scrutineers can require cameras to have a secondary tether. I understand this is to be enforced for GoPro-style cameras at Cadwell (but not for small "bullet" cameras). As I see it the options are:

  1. A cable tie round the main body of the camera which acts as the anchor for more cable ties or a strap to the roll cage. This will, of course, make it harder to access the memory card and/or battery, but is the easiest option with "what you have on the day".
  2. A commercial GoPro tether which attaches to the camera via a sticky plate or looped around the mounting screw
  3. If you have lock wire and lock wire pliers, make your own lanyard like I did here
  4. Andrew managed to get a wire lanyard round this door closing mechanism on his GoPro - see pic here

Donington Endurance

Reduced-price entry to the endurance was extended to this Wednesday (until 12:00 midday, I believe).  If you're considering entering but don't have a team organised, please let Tristan know urgently, and he'll try to match you into a team. You don't have to be a current (or even past) Grads member to enter, but you do of course need an MSA licence.

Zandvoort Entries

Entry for our Spa races will open very soon via the CGRC Event Entry System

  • The entry fee is 650 pounds, which covers 3 hours 20 minutes of track time - 5 x 25 minute practice sessions, 25 minute qualifying, and 2 x 25 minute races
  • There are a maximum of 56 places available
  • As in previous years, priority entry will be granted to the drivers who entered our first two race meetings. There are 42 drivers who qualify for priority entries. Priority entry opens on Saturday 6th May at 9am. If you want to take advantage of a priority entry, don't leave it to the last possible moment to book in case there's a problem. Once normal booking opens, your priority status disappears.
  • All remaining places will be made available on a first-come-first-served basis on Tuesday 9th May at 7pm. After the 56 places are filled there will be up to 10 reserve places available.
  • In order to enter, your race schedule must show that you are "Definitely" racing at Zandvoort.

For newcomers, note that you must have a "National A" licence to race at Zandvoort. It is your responsibility to ensure that you have obtained the necessary signatures and upgraded your licence prior to the event.

In the past, our foreign races have sold out very quickly. To make sure your entry goes through smoothly, I would suggest these precautions:

  • Make sure you're available, at your PC, at 7pm on the 9th. If you're not able to do that, consider asking someone else to enter on your behalf.
  • Make sure your profile is complete and says you are definitely racing at Zandvoort.
  • Have your credit or debit card to hand (credit cards have a 4.5% surcharge to cover WorldPay fees).
  • If you move around, make sure you know the "billing address" for your card.
  • Make sure you know any Verified by Visa / Mastercard Securecode needed.
  • Finally, please note that there is an issue with the WorldPay booking system and the default Safari browser on Apple devices (Macs, iPhones and iPads). Fix it by following these instructions, using a PC, instead, or by installing Google Chrome as a second browser, and booking through that.
If that all fails, and you end up as a reserve, don't despair. In the past, all of our reserves have always got to race. Several people always drop out for one reason or another in the weeks before the event. There are, of course, no guarantees - but it's more than likely you will get to race.

BARC have asked us to provide safety car drivers for our races at Pembrey.

It's not an onerous, job, most of the time you'll just sit in the car listening to the radio chatter (which can be quite fascinating if you've never done it before). In the event of an incident you just have to drive round at a steady 50mph until told to pull off.

Graeme's volunteered for the first two races Saturday, so we need a Mega / Super / SIgma driver for the second two, and then two drivers from appropriate classes for Sunday.

Drivers must have MSA licences.

Let me know by email or in person tonight / tomorrow if you're willing to give it a go.

Pembrey is now confirmed to be on both layouts - old circuit Sat, new circuit Sun. Testing, as mentoned before, should be on old circuit morning, new circuit afternoon.

Paddock:  We have the whole inner paddock to ourselves for Friday and Saturday, with 22 Welsh Sports and Saloons joining us for Sunday.
So there should be plenty of space, but don't abuse it, and make sure there is some space left for them.

MOTORHOMES: Please park  around the edge of the paddock NOT in the centre area.

There will be limited (paid for) power in the centre area, but we haven't budgeted for motorhomes (as I only had one reply to my offer to provide extra power at cost for motorhomes).

Many people didn't read the finals at Oulton, and hence nearly missed the mandatory briefing. Please don't make that mistake again. I'm guessing that the "new drivers briefing" only applies to those who haven't raced at Pembrey at all, rather than those who haven't raced on the new layout (which is everyone).

Zandvoort - 29th & 30th July 2017

We are pleased to announce the provisional arrangements, costs, format and booking arrangements for this year's overseas round.

We have secured additional free practice time on the Saturday so that you do not need to attend the Friday Track Day. The plan is that everyone will have the following track time:-

  • 5 Free Practice Sessions (25 minutes each)
  • 1 Qualifying Session (25 minutes)
  • 2 Races (25 minutes each)
The entry fee is great value at £650 (inclusive of Free Practice).

There are 56 places available. If you don't get your entry in on the day that non-priority entries open, it is quite possible you will find yourself as a reserve. However, we always get a few drop-outs, so it is very likely that all reserves will actually get to race.

Catering at Oulton

For the benefit of new drivers, and anyone not sure of the rules:

Your Grads membership entitles you to food at all rounds. Our wonderful caterer Gail provides tea and coffee all day on test and race days, and light breakfast, buffet lunch and afternoon tea on race days.

This is provided for you and ONE helper. That helper might be a team mechanic, your partner, or a friend who's come along. It's not transferable, so if you're on your own you can't donate your "extra" to someone else who has brought two friends.  Any other extras, including kids, are charged at a very reasonable £5 per person per day and must be booked in advance by emailing Gail. Try to give her several days notice as she has to know how many extras she needs to buy food for - though if you have a surprise visitor you can always let her know on the day.

The £5 is payable directly to Gail - it's nothing to do with the club. If you don't pay, you're taking the money directly from her pocket, so please be honest. If you have very young kids who don't eat much I'm sure Gail will do you a deal.

Tyres

If you want tyres at Oulton, please book them in advance by calling Steve Polley on 01354 688111 or email steve@polleymotorsport.co.uk

I'm not sure we've posted it yet, but it's likely that Classics will be changing tyres for 2018, and all other classes may move to a different tyre.  So it's worth managing your tyres such that you don't end the season with several sets of nearly-new tyres. We'll know more mid-season when Yokohama have decided which tyres they'll be producing in 13 inch sizes.

The majority of decal orders were handed out at Donington. For those that requested delivery by post, these have been sent and should arrive very shortly. Going forward Pete Godfrey’s Godfrey Racing Support (GRS) has kindly agreed to hold the replacement decal stock this season and decals will be available in the paddock on test and race days. For those that ordered for pick up at the Oulton Test Day or at a later race meeting, please pick up from GRS.

Please note the following:-
1.       We didn’t have enough REIS decals (race number 119 onwards) – if this impacts on you please pick up the 2 new decals you require from GRS at your first test day / race meeting.
2.       Our latest sponsor Thames Valley Car Storage – http://thamesvalleycarstorage.co.uk , owned by Club member Tristan Judge (Sigmax 5), has taken to nose cone slot. Tristan handed out his decals at the track day. For those who did not attend please pick up from GRS at your first test day / race meeting - you have a choice of white or black background.

For those that did not place an order, your decals can be collected from GRS at the first race meeting you attend. If you are new member they will comprise a full set and if you were a 2016 Member they are a set of the new decals.

For any 2017 members who signed up after 18 February (that is both new and 2016 members) you need to see GRS at your first test / race day and select what you need.  

A reminder, whilst the Club provide number squares we do not provide race numbers, although these may be available to purchase from GRS. The above applies to sponsor and Club decals – if you require a set driver names please order by emailing  decals@graduates.org.uk.

We owe much to our generous sponsors, please ensure your cars are well presented and have a full set of decals applied prior to your first race. I strongly recommend that you take your time and apply the decals away from a race meeting. It will take some time to remove the old decals, clean up any left over adhesive and apply new ones. Our regs demand that your display accurately positioned decals.

As many of you know, the Club is celebrating its 20th Anniversary by running a very special endurance race at Donington Park on Sunday 4th June 2017. It's a non-championship event, but conveniently arranged the day after our championship race.

This endurance event will be a four hour race where the competitors are in teams of two or more cars and drivers. The race will be run to a handicap format - this document will explain more about the event and how a handicap system works. The main point is that any team in any type of Caterham is capable of winning the race, and everyone can drive their own car.

We will be opening entries for the race shortly and really hope that you will join us for what will be an amazing weekend. More information to follow.

Outon Park is now on the International Circuit

Great news - we've managed to convince BARC NW to run the meeting on the International circuit rather than the Island circuit. We told them we'd get a bigger entry for that layout, so let's not don't disappoint them! If anyone hasn't done Oulton International, you really are in for a treat. In my opinion it's the best circuit in the country.

If you've not booked testing yet - don't leave it much longer. MSV testing regularly sells out well before the meeting, and it's only three weeks away.

Doninton Trackday Info

Entry to the circuit from 5pm on Friday. You will be able to park up in front of the garages, though it's likely you won't be able to get in until they're unlocked on Saturday morning. Camping at the circuit is not allowed but there is a public campsite very close. (Leaving unoccupied motor homes at the circuit should be fine, and I doubt anyone will be checking them too closely).

Timetable for the day is as follows:

12:30Lunch
13:30Novice session begins
13:50General Driving resumes
17:00End of day (depending on light conditions)

Drivers and extra drivers must arrive promptly to the 08:30 safety briefing, if anyone is late and the briefing has begun, they will have to wait until the second late drivers briefing at 09:30. Passengers must sign on, but do not need to attend the briefing.

Signing on and briefing is in the Bookatrack Caterham showroom near the paddock entrance. If you have ordered a decal pack for delivery at Donington, please collect them when you sign on.

Bookatrack are providing a free hog roast in their facility at lunchtime. Tea, coffee and soft drinks are provided all day in both the Bookatrack showroom and the Grad's hospitality garage.

Instruction: We have one Bookatrack instructor, who can provide instruction free of charge.  There are 10 30-minute sessions available starting at 9:30.  Email me if you want to take advantage of this, with a preferred time. Priority will be given to new drivers if it is oversubscribed (it probably won't be). You will obviously need a passenger seat in your car to receive instruction.

Bookatracks rules and regulations (some of which obviously don't apply to our cars):
  • All cars must pass a 98dB drive-by noise limit
  • Drivers and passengers must sign on and obtain a wristband to be allowed access on track.
  • All drivers must attend a safety briefing at 08:30. (For late arrivals the second briefing will be at 09:30).
  • Road cars must be MOT’d, race cars must have passed MSA scrutineering within the last year (We do not scrutineer cars therefore it is the responsibility of participants to ensure their car is in track worthy condition)
  • All participants must wear a suitable crash helmet and have covered arms and legs.
  • Slick tyres are permitted but only if the car has adequate roll protection.
  • Passengers must be 16 years or older, if under 18 years old a parent or guardian must counter sign their disclaimer. (No children under 16 years of age are allowed in the pit lane).
  • Hand held cameras cannot be used whilst out on track.

Donington Access: We expect to have access from around 5pm on Friday. I think we should be able to get into the garages, but that's not entirely clear at the moment.

Anyone still thinking of coming but not yet booked, please do it by the weekend. We need to send a list of drivers to Bookatrack on Monday. We also need to do a garage plan.

** Additional Drivers ** : there is no charge for these, but they MUST be notified in advance. Please let me know if you intend anyone else to drive your car. They must also attend the briefing and sign on.

Passengers will need to sign on, but no need to notify in advance or attend the briefing.

Can I ask everyone who has not done so yet to PLEASE update their schedules to say whether they expect to be racing at Zandvoort or not. There are half as many people who haven't updated their schedules as there are people who say they are going. We need to work out the timetable and how to allocate sessions in the next few days, and we can't do that with that kind of uncertainty in numbers.

For those of you who HAVE updated your schedules, well done and thank you.

Meanwhile - Donington Trackday 25th February. Only three weeks away now, and we need to start planning garage allocations and stuff.  If you've not entered and intend to, please do so this week. If you're not sure if your car will be ready, or something similar, please drop me an email and we can work something out.

Zandvoort is definitely confirmed for 29/30 July.

Our meeting includes two 25-minute dedicated practice sessions on the Saturday, possibly with more available at extra cost.

There is a also trackday available on the Friday, but it's not cheap - 450 Euros for the full day or 220 / 320 Euros for the morning / afternoon respectively. See Legendary Circuit's website for more details or to book it.

With the change to the Zandvoort date, it's really important that we know how many people are likely to race there. The grid limit is 47, and we currently have two grids.  If a significant number of people can't make it, we might be better dropping down to a single grid, Spa-style. But if we under-estimate, that would mean people will get turned away.

If you've not done so (and many people haven't), please update your race schedule to say which rounds you intend doing. Of course plans can change, but please use "definitely" or "definitely not" unless you're really unsure.

I'm pleased to announce that bookings are now open for our pre-season trackday at Donington on February 25th.

Bookings are via our own Event Entry system, accessed via the "Members" link on the website.

For those not familiar with the system, you need to be a paid-up racing or social member of the Grads, and you need to have completed your race schedule, indicating which events you intend to enter.

Cost is £295, which includes free use of garages, and no additional cost for passengers or extra drivers.

Places for the trackday are limited, and it's less than two months away, so please don't delay booking.

2017 Pre-Season Track Day - Donington

As is traditional, we will be running a pre-season trackday. This year we'll be back at Donington Park, with a day run exclusively for us by Bookatrack. Since the season starts early on 18th March, the pre-season trackday will be three weeks before, on a possibly slightly chilly 25th February.

Our pre-season trackday has always been primarily a social event rather than an all-out test day. You are encouraged to bring partners, friends and family, and to take them out for rides or even let them drive your car if you trust them enough.

The good news about running it in February is that the hire price is lower, so we should be able to throw in all the extras like passengers, second drivers and garages FOC. It is Donington, so it won't be dirt cheap, but it should be very good value for money.

I'll post soon with a price and an opening date for booking.What if it snows? (A few people here will remember Oulton in, I think, 2006!). If we can't run we should get a credit for an alternative hire date, which we'll probably use for the Friday before our Donington round.

I hope as many people as possible will make it. It's always a great day out and a good way to wind gently into the new season. For any drivers new to the club, it's also a great time to get to know people and chat about the cars and the racing without the stress of a race weekend.

I'm pleased to announce that registration for the 2017 APL Health Caterham Graduates Championship will open this Thursday, 1st December.

The championship fee is £200, but entries during December will be discounted to £150. Payment, as usual, is through the WorldPay system.

You can sign up through the website, through the Enrol with the Club link under the "About Grads Racing" tab.

(Please note that the link to WorldPay doesn't usually work on Apple's Safari browser, so use an alternative browser such as Chrome, or use a non-Apple device - contact me if you're having problems).

There's a summary of 2017 regulation changes in the Comp Info section. The main change is that video cameras are now mandatory (but don't worry, you're not going to get slapped with a £50 fine every time you forget to put a memory card in or switch it on -  at least, not for the first few meetings).

Race numbers for 2017:

Our class numbering system has evolved over the years as we've added new classes. One of the problems we've had in explaining the class system to commentators,  potential new drivers and others is that there was no obvious structure to the numbering.

Therefore for 2017 we'll be adopting the following system. Sigma-engined cars will be numbered 1-99, and K-series and Classics 101 - 199. Faster / newer classes will receive lower numbers, meaning the SigMax champion will be able to take the coveted "number 1" plate for the following year.

1 - 59Sigmax(upgrade of Sigma)
61 - 99 Sigma (2008 - 2013)
101 - 139 Mega (upgrade of Super)
141 - 169 Super (2001 - 2007)
171 - 199 Classic (1995 - 2000)

For anyone who isn't aware, the first 10 slots in each class are reserved for the drivers coming in the corresponding first 10 places in the previous year.

I apologise to anyone who is attached to their current number, or considers it "lucky". I'm afraid you'll have to rely on the lucky underpants instead!

SuperGrads 2017

Following a consultation with drivers, it has been decided not to change SuperGrads for 2017.  Supers will have no specification changes and will keep their own championship table.  We will make a decision on a round-by-round basis as to whether to grid them with Megas according to absolute qualifying time, or whether to give them their own part of the grid as has been usual in the past.

Our regs (section 1.7) already allow for smaller classes - fewer than eight cars - in terms of trophies awarded, and should numbers fall below those figures we would expect to apply those rules.

I'd like to thank everyone who took part in these discussions, and I hope everyone is happy with the final decision.

Spa passes

Spa passes have been posted out today. All drivers who we expect to be trailering behind a car will receive a "Working Vehicle" pass to park in the main paddock (no vehicle passes are needed for vans or trucks or - we think - motorhomes). Team-supported drivers will receive two car park passes, you will NOT be able to park ordinary cars in the main paddock unless they are tow cars. If we've got it wrong, don't panic, there will be a few extra working vehicle passes available on the day - see Charles.

We currently have one grid space available if anyone wants to put in a last-minute entry. Ask around if you know anyone who might be interested.

Also, I'm sad to say, it looks likely that I won't be able to race due to a knee injury, in which case there will be two places available. I may also have a Francorchamps hotel room and Eurotunnel booking available as well.

The Club have been allocated the Pit Garages at Oulton Park for Saturday only, for which there is a Garage Plan here.

There is a paddock plan here  For Saturday, we have the area directly behind the garages plus the nearest two areas shown on the plan (one "vertical" one "sloped" as you view the plan).

If you have not booked a garage for testing, please keep the area directly behind the garages free on the Friday for people using them. You can use the other two areas, or if necessary overflow elsewhere in the paddock (but be ready to move Friday evening).

CATERHAM GRADUATES RACING CLUB AWARDS DINNER  Saturday - 12th November 2016


Following the success of our previous Awards Dinner events, the 3rd CGRC Awards Evening Dinner will be held at the Hellidon Lakes Golf and Spa Hotel on Saturday, 12th November 2016.

This will enable the club to appropriately recognize and congratulate the CGRC championship winners, runners up and special awards winners with recipients receiving their individual championship trophy from the guest speaker - Paul O'Neill (a prominent BTCC competitor and presenter).

This prestigious black tie event will be held at the Hellidon Lakes Golf and Spa Hotel on the Warwickshire / Northamptonshire border near Daventry, close to the M1 and M40.

Hellidon Lakes Golf and Spa Hotel is a 4 star, 110 bedroom hotel and conference centre set in a spectacular location.

The range of facilities at the hotel available include:-

  • 18 hole golf course

  • Gym / fitness centre
  • Spa / beauty therapy centre

The Caterham Graduates driving standards team has identified two on track incident where one car has pulled over towards another car with the potential for causing a collision.  In both cases the car that moved over did not have a driver’s side mirror.  Currently our regulations 5.6.2 (ii) d refer to MSA requirements Q19.15.1. The MSA requirements only define the area of the mirror,not the number of mirrors.

The following change to the regulation has been requested.

5.3.2 (xviii) A minimum of two mirrors shall be fitted. One shall be mounted on the windscreen or rollcage as an ‘internal rear view’ mirror and one shall be mounted on the driver’s side of the car as an “external rear view” mirror.  It is permitted to fit additional mirrors. Mirrors shall meet the MSA requirements Q19.15.1

This change may be made immediately on the grounds of safety, rather than waiting until next year and subject to MSA approval could be in place before our Oulton Park races.  In any case the change will be introduced in next year’s regulations.

Therefore it is recommended that competitors who do not have two mirrors, fit additional mirrors to meet the requirements of the proposed change in regulations.

If you have (or think you should have) a priority booking but haven't yet booked, I suggest you do it earlier rather than later.  If there any issues it won't be possible to do anything about once normal booking has opened.

Oulton Park

At Oulton there will be a 20 minute free practice session at the start of the day. This is excellent value at 30 pounds, and can be booked via the BARC race entry system. The International (full) circuit will be in use, and the quali sessions are 20 minutes.  That's a lot of track time to fit in a single day - make sure your car, and you, are fully fit for the day.

Spa Entries

Entry for our Spa races will open very soon via the CGRC Event Entry System

  • The entry fee is 575 pounds, which covers 2.5 hours of track time - 2 x 30 minute practice sessions, 30 minute qualifying, and 2 x 30 minute races.
  • All classes will race together. There are 65 places on the grid

  • As in previous years, priority entry will be granted to the 33 drivers who have raced in all the rounds up to and including Thruxton. Priority entry opens on Friday 1st July at 7pm.

  • All remaining places will be made available on a first-come-first-served basis on Tuesday 5th July at 7pm. After the 65 places are filled there will be up to 13 reserve places available.

  • In order to enter, your race schedule must show that you are "Definitely" racing at Spa.

For newcomers, note that you must have a "National A" licence to race at Spa. It is your responsibility to ensure that you have obtained the necessary signatures and upgraded your licence prior to the event.

In the past, our Spa races have sold out within minutes. To make sure your entry goes through smoothly, I would suggest these precautions:

  • Make sure you're available, at your PC, at 7pm on the 5th. If you're not able to do that, consider asking someone else to enter on your behalf.

  • Make sure your profile is complete and says you are definitely racing at Spa.

  • Have your credit or debit card to hand (credit cards have a 4.5% surcharge to cover WorldPay fees).

  • If you move around, make sure you know the "billing address" for your card.

  • Make sure you know any Verified by Visa / Mastercard Securecode needed.

  • Finally, please note that the WorldPay booking system doesn't like the default Safari browser on Apple devices (Macs, iPhones and iPads). I suggest using a PC, if possible, or installing Google Chrome as a second browser, and booking through that.

If that all fails, and you end up as a reserve, don't despair. In the past, all of our reserves have always got to race. Several people always drop out for one reason or another in the weeks before the event. There are, of course, no guarantees - but it's more than likely you will get to race.

Brands Info

There is a paddock plan available in the Comp Info section of the website.
Please only park in our areas - don't encroach into the 2CV section at the top of the third block. Note the section against the wall at the far left isn't allocated on BARC's plan, that could be used as overflow space if necessary.

Power:  Power is available all round the edge of the circuit, but not in the central sections. If you need to run cables to the centre, please make sure they are run through the cut-out ducts in the tarmac. Screwfix will sell you a 45m cable drum for £32, which is hard to beat. You will need to change the plug or use a "caravan adapter" (preferably a waterproof one!)

AGM

The club's Annual General Meeting will be held at 5:15pm on Saturday (or slightly later if racing is delayed) in the CGRC awning in the paddock.

As an incentive to attend the AGM, we will be giving away five pairs of tyres kindly donated by Yokohama.  You DO need to be a registered CGRC competitor attending the AGM to enter the draw, but you don't need to be actually racing at Brands.

Saturday Evening Event

This will be held in the MSV Centre, which is the building outside Clearways near the main entrance to the circuit.

At next Saturday's AGM, we will be electing three board members from the six candidates standing.

I've asked each candidate to write a short intro, and these can be found in the Members' Area, or from this direct link.

Andrew Outterside, Graeme Smith and Tristan Judge are existing board members standing down by rotation but offering themselves for reelection.  Nigel Board was narrowly defeated last year and is standing again, Michael Downing and Peter Tattersall are standing for the first time.

I thank all the candidates for putting themselves forward to help out with the running of the club.

Final Call for Auction and Quiz Night Tickets

Tickets will be available for the Caterham Graduates Racing Club Charity Auction and Quiz Night on Saturday 25th June at Brands Hatch, until the end of this week (Friday 17th June).

A two course buffet will be provided. When confirming your place, please can you provide an indication of your preferred team (maximum of 10 people) and any dietary requirements.

All monies from the auction will be going to the British Heart Foundation.

THRUXTON DRIVING STANDARDS

Some great and not so great racing at the weekend. This note is from the CGRC Driving Standards Team about the not so great racing.

It was disappointing that Nigel Price, our Clerk for the weekend, felt it necessary to address 2 of our 3 grids (the Megas / Supers and Classics) on Sunday morning about our Driving Standards.  Nigel raised 2 particular concerns, one regarding the very unfortunate last lap chicane incident in the Classics race and the multiple contacts that occurred in the Megas / Supers race. The Driving Standards Team are investigating these issues.

Sunday was much better and Nigel was generally pleased with all our races.

In addition to the above there was lots of “paddock talk” about passing under yellows – particularly in Saturday’s Sigma / Sigmax race, when the safety car was deployed. DST tip - to increase the awareness of a flag to closely following cars it often helps to obviously point at the marshals post.   

We’ve not at present received any complaints about the yellow flag incidents and remind Members that if they wish this, or any other driving standards issue to be addressed, they should complete the short form on the website and send it to the DST. It is very useful if you can supply video evidence.  The DST can’t take effective action unless incidents are reported to us.

The form is in the Members Area under Member Links / Driving Standards – at the bottom of that page you will find the form, complete it and press the send button and it is emailed to the DST.

Alternatively, if you simply want to discuss an incident and get a view from the DST, or a member of the DST, on whether you should report an incident, send an email to the whole team at standards@graduates.org.uk or contact any team member directly via their details in the Members Area.

The DST has 5 members, drawn from each of our classes, they are:-

Declan Dolan – Mega
Rick Potter – Sigmax
Chris Rome – Super
Andrew Outterside – Sigma

When an incident is reported to DST it is allocated to one of the team members (they will not deal with their own Class) and will be investigated and if appropriate action will be taken. Feedback will be given on conclusion of the investigation, whatever the outcome.

Just a heads-up on Spa booking.  We will be opening it on 1st July.  As is usual, we will be taking priority bookings from those people who have entered all the rounds up to Thruxton, and then opening up for general bookings a few days later. While we have never yet failed to provide a place for everyone who wants one, to make sure you're not on the reserve list you do need to book promptly.  More info on exact dates and times, and the booking procedure, will be sent out soon.

The price is expected to be £575 for two 30 minute practice sessions, a 30 minute qualifying session and two 30 minute races.  However, should the value of the pound collapse after events later this month, we may have to revisit that. And in any case we will reserve the right to apply a small surcharge if the pounds falls heavily before we make the final payment (we've already paid 50%).

We will be holding our club AGM at Brands.

A formal notice will be sent out later this week, but meanwhile I'd like to hear from anyone interested in standing for the CGRC board.

We have two directors standing down by rotation this year (meaning they have served three years so have to be elected to do more "time"). Those are Graeme Smith and Andrew Outterside. Since a minimum of three directors have to stand down, Tristan Judge has agreed to do so as well. All will be standing for re-election, but we don't want to give them an easy time, so I'm looking for other people willing to stand.

What is the Grads' board?  It consists of two parts - the Executive, composed of the Chairman (currently me), Secretary (Charles), Treasurer (Mark) and Technical Director (Nick H), and five non-Executive directors.The four-man Executive conducts the day-to-day business of the club. The non-execs are not as involved, but are consulted on "larger" decision, and meet at board meetings on a semi-regular basis. The Executive is elected annually by the larger board.

So being a non-exec director is not particularly onerous, but you do need to be willing to respond reasonably fast to emails and attend the odd board meeting (mostly at race meetings) through the year. And of course we'd hope that this year's non-Exec directors might eventually become part of the Exec as the current Exec members retire, burn out, or whatever.

Please let me know by this Friday if you are interested in making a contribution to the club by standing for the board.

Thruxton

Thruxton is just two weeks away. Can the 34 people who haven't decided whether they're going, please update their schedules?  Remember you need to book by this Wednesday to avoid the late fee.

At the moment there is no free practice listed but we are hoping to replace one of our quali sessions with a free practice. Unfortunately that still won't be enough for everyone, so I'm going to ask for priority booking for those who have never raced there. If that's you (and your race schedule says you are definitely racing), drop me an email to let me know by close of day tomorrow (Tuesday).

Update from Rockingham - they now say we can get in any time after 12:00 noon on Thursday.

The only caveat is that they have an important conference going on in the conference centre, so asked us to steer well clear of that and not peer through the windows or hang around outside the doors.

The circuit restaurant will be open until 3pm, but again please avoid the conference centre if you're going there.

Just spoken to Rockingham. They have an evening cycling event on Thursday and say we won't be allowed in to the outer paddock until they're all inside the circuit - which should be around 6pm. If you're there before that, security might decide it's better to let you in than to have you blocking the access road, but no promises on that.

The outer paddock toilets will be open Thursday evening, which is no doubt a relief to those whose paddock sleeping arrangements don't stretch to a full-facility motorhome.

There is no paddock plan this time. The outer paddock should be plenty big enough for all of us, but please be considerate and don't take more space than you need.
