I would like to thank the driving standards committee for awarding me the Ben Vickers Memorial Award at last weeks dinner dance. It is a great honour and it has pride of place in our living room in full view of anyone entering. Being awarded it was a complete surprise, in fact I was thrilled, astounded and astonished (not necessarily in that order but all at the same time!). Thankfully, I didn't have to say an acceptance speech otherwise it would have come out in an incomprehensible garble. Having never won, or been awarded, anything in my life I am extremely chuffed to bits. It was also a pleasure meeting Ben's father after the awards; what a nice guy. He turns up at each year's dinner dance to meet the driver who get's the trophy. Thank you all again.

NF

George: Just make sure you shout only provisionally loudly...

George

Rockingham, Croft, Pembrey, Brands, Snetterton:

Graduates Racing 2009 -
enrolment now open! And already, after less than four days, a
very impressive total of 61 of you have signed-up (30 Supers, 22 Megas, 9
Classics). Many thanks!

Details were in the November newsletter that I
sent out last Friday but here they are again:

The enrolment process is all very much the same
as before on-line enrolment; a priority system for members and a (very) modest
increase in subs. Racing subs go up from 275 to 285. The New to
Classics discount of 150 is again being offered. Social membership stays
at 10. Just click here and follow the
instructions!On-line enrolment opened on Monday (10th Nov) for current
racing members to renew. On 17th Nov, 2008's Social Members will be able
to sign up to race in 2009 and a further week later, 24th Nov, the system will
be open for anyone to sign up. This priority system is to
ensure that space is available to those who most deserve it. But please
note that you only get a week or two of priority, after that, it's open
season. I would love to be able to keep a place open, permanently, for all
this year's racing members but it just would not be fair to our potential new
members if we had to make some of them wait many months to be certain of their
place while some old hands make up their minds. As in previous years,
drivers renewing for the same class, who finished in the top ten of their
class's championship table, will automatically be assigned a race number
corresponding to their 2008 championship position; other drivers get to choose
their race number (which is also your club membership number): first-come,
first-served.Will we fill up and need to decline later
enrolments? Dunno. Maybe. There has been a healthy level of
interest from a good number of potential new members, novices and otherwise, so
it is quite possible that we may feel obliged to decide to close the books at
some time, to avoid having so many members that there is a danger that not
everyone would get to race when and where they want to. And please don't
think that this only applies to the larger classes (Supers and Megas) given
that we sometimes have to share grid space between classes, it is the total
number of enrolled drivers that is most likely to trigger us into closing the
books, so please do not delay just because you are in Classics
and think that this class will not be over-subscribed.It could be that
we do not close enrolment until well into next year, but a healthy rush over
the next couple of weeks could mean that we close much earlier. So please
do not delay unnecessarily!

Information about the regs for next year
can be seen in our website's Competitor Info section, here.

2009
Calendar?
The FIA changes that I mentioned in the
newsletter have delayed publication of BARC's calendar. But I
can say that, as usual, our calendar will be put together to
give us a good wide range of circuits - our aim is that, over a few seasons, a
Graduate racer can expect to get the opportunity to race at just about
every circuit in the land! Our 2009 objective is to have fourteen
races over about nine weekends (so you can work that out - there will
probably be four one day single races and five weekend
double-headers). It is our intention that we will have an "exotic"
overseas double-header again. Possibly Spa, again, but we
are considering alternatives! Very
provisionally, I expect most, if not all , of the following circuits to figure
in the remaining eight UK rounds: Brands, Silverstone, Snetterton, Croft,
Oulton, Rockingham, Pembrey and Cadwell.

Not Racing in
2009?If you were a 2008 Racing Member but think you may decide
not to race with us in 2009, may I suggest that you consider signing up, for a
just a tenner, as a "Social Member"? At least I can then keep in
touch with you! And it would give me a clear indication of your
intentions, meaning I won't have to nag you incessantly over the next few weeks
to ask if you're going to race next
year!

Bunter

Catering Manager PT? Surely not.

The Dinner-Dance:
Was that not an excellent night out? JP arranging a
wedding beforehand so that we could all get in some early (and sponsored!)
drinking practice was certainly a brilliant move. Unfortunately, when it
came to my turn to go up on stage to collect my marvellous surprise gift from
Caterham's Ansar Ali, I realised that my brain had by then very
little control over my mouth and little more than gobbledegook came
out.... Sorry everyone - that was when I should have been making public
acknowledgement of all the hard work that everyone else puts into making Grads
such a success!

So, thank you, all, again. And thank you all for helping
to make the dinner-dance such a success. Let's see if we can get even more
Grads there next year!!!!

My presentation gift, by the way, is a rather splendid
painting of me racing up Kemmel Straight and it celebrates the fact that
although I won not a single darn thing this year (not even a B.I. medal) I
do still hold the Graduates' lap record for the greatest
race circuit in the world!

Steve Humphreys

Glad you all had a good time at the Grads Do. I have just checked the collecting tin (collecting tupperware more like) and we managed to raise a total of 3.85 for the Benevolent Fund for Disadvantaged Estate Agents. Which is about 3.80 more than I expected :-p ... Seeing as people don't seem to feel especially sorry for disadvantaged estate agents we will donate this to TCT, along with some other cash.

Mike

Adam B - how soon do you need that axle? The list includes: a green leprechaun hat, an orange beard, a 'women in waders' calendar, a mobile phone headset, a purse, camera and room key set (since reclaimed), some gold envelopes, a red bra, some enormous glasses, an Academy 1999 DVD, a pair of clown shoes, and a Mrs Bunty. Anyone wishing to claim any of the above should contact me at the usual address, or check ebay...

The cardboard cutout of Shunty has already been requested by the man himself to put in the driving seat of his racecar, "as it would probably drive faster than me." And he did genuinely say that, honest!!

The alternative awards - think of it as The Razzies to the Oscars - will once again take place directly after the "real" awards at the Caterham Dinner-Dance on Saturday night. This year's Moobies will feature new awards, including "Comedy Accident", "Shed of the Season", and "It Takes A Special Kind Of Talent...", as well as some awards which are not suitable for a family forum! We are also trying to negotiate the return of the Leprechauns, who were possibly the highlight of last year's event.

All are welcome, especially anyone who thinks they might be in danger of winning one of these unglamourous and uncoveted prizes. Or who just fancies a good laugh at - sorry, with - those that do.

CGRC regs: changes for
2009In this site's Competitor Info section, you will
now find a new link to a page "Summary of regs changes for 2009".Catalytic converters:There was some discussion about
this on the forum recently, in the light of which The Exec has decided that both
Supers and Megas should be free to use either the standard McMillan non-cat
exhaust coupled with a specific after-market cat, or the standard Caterham cat
exhaust. The exact choice of after-market cat is still being researched
and will be defined and announced later. This means that all competitors
can choose whichever solution is cheapest for them - standard Caterham
exhaust if they still have one lying around somewhere; the new "add-on" cat if
they don't.We have no comparative performance data as yet, but we
believe they will be very similar, especially for Supers. Megas, with the
higher rev limit, can probably expect a minor benefit to using the add-on
cat.

andrewennis

arrgh my eyes! the flashing banner is back on the homepage!

Ian N

I'm fairly sure that wasn't the point of the decision!

Tim GO

Excellent news re: cat exhaust attachment. But I think he should be forgiven if, in the excitement of the moment, he omitted to thoroughly consider his exact words before opening his mouth.

adam

not staying at the Copthorne but will be there in the evening

PT

Yes i will be there Hugh

P

Well said JP.
