If it is flooded, cranking the engine over with the throttle held wide open in several short bursts will help disperse the excess fuel vapour- just avoid depressing and releasing the throttle uneccesarily as obviously each time you do this it squirts more fuel in!

JP (in Fuerteventura)

Also, jump it to your car battery (with the engine running) to give it more ooommph. Take the plugs out and stick the electrode ends in the flames of your gas stove. Then quickly whip them back in the car, burning your fingers and swearing a lot, just like I used to with my Spitfire most winter mornings many years ago.

jo

I can confirm, however, that coolant tastes absolutely disgusting to adults and not at all like it looks!

Roger

General principles apply: make sure the battery's well charged. Consider keeping the battery indoors until ready to start it so it's warmer. How long since you last used it? Fresh petrol often helps if it's several months ago. Drain the carbs if it has them. Last resort, drain the coolant, heat it up on a stove and put it back in. Just like F1! (Careful, though, coolant is extremely poisonous but tastes great to animals and children).

Arthur Daley

sold as seen...................That means that as your punter has seen that it does not start he should not start giving you grief once he gets it home and finds out it's knackered.

I can't remember that far back! Anyway, you make it appear worse than it was, as I did a whole lap prior to the Quarry incident. The wheel-off incident was during qualifying at Snetterton. Anyone wanting to passenger with me should watch my youtube videos and then decide.
The problem for me is that I am very rusty and do not have a clue as to how an extra eight years will affect my speed, reactions and overall ability. As hard as it is to say it, I expect to be slower, and that's about it. That's why I was considering the previous day's test session - it would not be fair to other driver's passengers for me to start afresh on the day in question.
I've had an interesting e-mail which has been informative (thank you), but it may be sensible to have a word with Nick or similar over the weekend.

longmemories@combe.com

Was that when the wheels fell off?

PeteC

Peter, I seem to remember you giving a passenger a ride at Castle Combe a few years back. I wish I could afford to do the testday as well, but I can't. So I'll be wanting to "get up to speed" at the trackday - within the rules, of course.

Toby

Peter, there is nothing to stop you taking passengers. It is a track day and with all the pre-season events I have been to track day rules apply. I have also seen/ taken passengers at all of the track days.
That said it is likely that most of the participants in the day will be grads racing at the weekend. So whilst the normal rules will apply I would anticipate that the average speed and effort being applied by most drivers will be higher than most track days. For those happy to use this environment to reaquaint themselves with the track/ shake off the winter cobwebs/ pick their braking points etc for the weekends racing I'm sure the track day will suffice.
Anyone wanting to time themselves, use data logging, practice their overtaking, the thursday test is the one to do. Simples!
If your passengers are happy being taxied in an environment where there are some rapid drivers in much faster cars looking to get past within the track day rules, I'm sure they will enjoy the day. Lets face it if they are happy to be driven by you they are clearly bored of life in any case! :-) .

Peter Tattersall

Thanks Nick. I had seen the information previously, but couldn't remember where.
I'm a little surprised at the comments regarding the track day, which I thought was set up specifically as a day where passengers can be taken out and was more of a social event. Now, I'm willing to 'toe the line' with the rest of the Graduates, but can you guarantee that the event will be fully booked by Graduates? I don't know what the required numbers are, but BookaTrack will, I expect, take bookings from all and sundry in the not-to-distant future.
My understanding is that track days cannot be used as test days overtaking is via a specific formula and other rules also apply.
Having been away from any form of racing for over eight years, I did not consider it sensible or considerate to treat such an event as a means of getting back up to speed, especially as the same circuit is available just one day earlier for that exact reason.
Can someone please clear up my confusion? Do I book the test day as well (which I was just about to do), should I book the test day and cancel the track day, or just keep the track day?

Nick Frost

Donington races: Peter: "Grid sharing", ie. two classes racing on one grid, is something we have been doing for years. The arrangements are defined in our own regs. See 3.1.5, 3.4.2, 3.5.2/4 and 3.6.3.In order to get to race at Donington, and specifically to be in the "Motors TV Live" racing package, the Club has had to agree to buy the track time we need. Which is very expensive. So we opted to buy just two grids - three grids would have exposed the Club to huge financial risk that we just couldn't bear. Having said that, we have contingency plans in place with BARC which will provide more track-time if the entry numbers justify it.

Pembrey Circuit

Good Morning

Wouldn't you rather learn the circuit and get used to your new car the way it's going to be for racing? I can't help thinking that if there are passengers on track then overtaking rules may be more rigorously enforced.

Peter Tattersall

I've just found the time table for the Donington Park race here:
http://www.donington-park.co.uk/events/car/2012/03/31/motors-tv-live-car-raceday/
Caterham Graduates are split into Group A and Group B. I'm guessing two classes race in each? How does this work? I guess that both classes form up on the grid together, with the faster class at the head. Is there a staggered start to ensure the pole Classic does not get mixed up with the trailing Sigmas? I think I've read something in the Blue Book and that the arrangement is optional. If nobody answers over the weekend, I'll let you know what I find.

Peter Tattersall

Excellent news. Can someone tell me the equivalent Ford part no's for Sigma spark plugs & oil filter. I know regs say the plugs must be Caterham 36E038A, but I assume I can source these direct from Ford?
Also, I checked the oil type and everywhere says something slightly different. I'm sure I put Comma Eurolite 10w-40 semi-synthetic last year, but I checked elsewhere and the handbook & old build manual say either Caterham 5W-50 or Comma X-TEC 5W-30 both of which seem to be fully-synthetic. However, the terminals in your plug are removable with a very small pointy tool, so you may just be able to re-use your plug by prising out the little rubber water seals, removing the terminals and buying a couple of new terminals and a short length of wire for a few pennies. Fiddly stuff but it must be the cheapest way!

Unfortunately I don't see myself racing again any time soon so am putting my Brian James Clubman trailer up for sale. I've just had another look at the site and recognised it this time! In my defence, the incident I remember was at Snetterton. Croft was a big disappointment. I’d had my car serviced prior to the event, then straight afterwards (a rare treat, but the following race was at Spa). At Croft I wasn’t very fast and had a couple of incidents on the brakes, not slowing as I expected. Going to collect my car for Spa, the service hadn’t even been started, so I waited. During this time I was told I’d completely run out of brakes! I gritted my teeth and didn’t ask why they hadn’t been replaced at the previous race (I needed the service finishing and future ones conducting). This is one of the reasons I want to leave my car with McMM: I’ll have no excuses because my car will be well-prepared.

Mike Fesemeyer

Are you sure you have never been to croft? I do remember that incident, but it wasn't at Croft (I've never competed there). It was the end of the main straight at Snetterton. I'd been taken the corner faster and faster until I was entering in with the briefest of lifts. I wasn't confident I could take it flat, but had to find out. After a few attempts where I kept lifting, I finally forced myself to stay flat and went flying off into the fields. I should have trusted my instinct; the lift-off caused a forward weight-transfer, which loaded the front wheels, thus giving extra grip. It was a safe exercise due to the limitless run-off, and I did the farmer a favour as he had to hire one less combine-harvester. That weekend was one of only two times I ever qualified on a front row, in this case in second.
Congratulations with the fostering (or should that be commiserations?). Also, when I watched the Sky footage of Donnington, I got no sound. Was that a problem with my laptop?
